Canoe Polo - Youth Development

Avon Polo Club have been actively persuing the development of Youth Polo in the Bristol area throughout the summer. It started with members visiting clubs on individual club nights to give the younger members a taster followed by a number of sessions on the docks and a Scout and Guide Polo Tournament as a Millenium event.

This winter we have developed pool sessions for the new recruits at Filwood Bristol with a regular uptake of 14-16 under 16's. Boats and kit ate a problem and unfortunately we failed to get a millenium grant. Never mind, we will try again next year.

So to all the polo clubs in the region, let's go and set up a Youth League for the South West.

Successful teams could then enter the South West Div 1 feeder league and you never know where it might lead.

INTRODUCTION TO CANOE POLO COACHING COURSE

That Canoe Polo is the fastest growing discipline within the U.K. is remarkable. It is intrinsically the most attractive of the various canoe sports - it involves a ball - is played in 'gangs' - the teachers/youth leaders view it as relatively 'safe'

In 1996 the B.C.U. approved a series of Polo Coach awards starting at Level 2. As this was thought to be rather demanding for those taking the first tentative steps as coaches an 'Introduction to Canoe Polo Coaching' course has been set up to give Coach Level 1 status.

The aim is simple - to provide sufficient knowledge and information for the sport to be introduced in a safe, constructive and enjoyable manner.

So what is involved?

Course length 6 1/2 hours run either on 1 day or 2/3 evenings.
